In the mid-1800s, a self-appointed arbiter for New York society by the name of Samuel Ward McAllister coined the phrase “The Four Hundred.”
According to McAllister, this was the number of people in New York who really mattered. These individuals were the people who felt at ease in the ballrooms of high society and thought of themselves and their affiliates as “People That Matter (PTM).”
